Musicals have been an integral part of American theatre history. Following is a primer on some of the more well-known shows in the Broadway catalogue.
OKLAHOMA!
Set in Oklahoma Territory in 1906, cowboy Curly McLain romances farm girl Laurey Williams. Their love is challenged by Laurey's threatening farmhand, Jud Fry.
INTO THE WOODS
The musical intertwines a collection of uncensored versions of 19th century Brothers Grimm fairy tales. A baker and his wife's quest to begin a family ties together the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella. Each character's wish for something that he or she does not have leads to complications.
COMPANY
Shame on you, Playhouse subscribers! You should know this show well! Company follows Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship), the five married couples who are his best friends and his three girlfriends. Company is a concept musical comprised of short vignettes linked by a celebration of Bobby's 35th birthday.
SWEENEY TODD
Sweeney Todd, a.k.a. the demon barber of Fleet Street, is fresh out of prison and sets up shop above Mrs. Lovett's pie shop. He murders those responsible for his imprisonment while Mrs. Lovett bakes the carcasses into meat pies.
LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
Georges, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin, his star attraction and partner, face adventures when Georges' son brings home his fiancée's ultra-conservative parents.
MAME
Set in New York and spanning the Great Depression and World War II, this musical focuses on eccentric bohemian, Mame Dennis, whose motto is "Life is a banquet and most poor sons-of-bitches are starving to death." Her life is interrupted when the young son of her late brother arrives to live with her. They cope with the Depression in a series of adventures.
EVITA
This musical based on the life of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentinian dictator Juan Peron, follows Evita, a poor girl from a backwater Argentinian town. She uses any important man she can find to get where she wants, becoming a famous actress and eventually the first lady of her country.
SUNSET BOULEVARD
Based on the 1950 film of the same title and Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent film era, who lives in her decaying Sunset Boulevard mansion. When a young screenwriter accidentally crosses her path, she sees an opportunity to make her comeback to the big screen. An unrequited romance and tragedy follow.
CABARET
Set in a Berlin nightclub just before WWII, Cabaret follows frequenters of the Kit Kat Club. The main plotline focuses on the love affair between cabaret singer Sally Bowles and an American writer and the different ways they deal with the changes Germany is undergoing during Hitler's rise to power.
