ROSENTHAL SHELTERHOUSE THEATRE

ABOUT THE SHOW

Based on a true story and inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright, I Am My Own Wife is the fascinating tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an elegant and eccentric German trans woman who, against all odds managed to survive the Nazis during World War II and the repressive Communist regime that followed. One actor gives a tour-de-force performance of over 30 roles, including the controversial figure herself and the American writer who becomes intrigued by her. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this profound story of survival is both a record of her life, and an examination of how and why we preserve histories that have been purposefully destroyed or hidden away out of necessity.

“A story that is both moving and intellectually absorbing.”The New York Times
