ABOUT THE SHOW

One of the most celebrated Broadway plays in recent years, winning both the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize, Purpose is a riveting and hilarious new drama that lays bare the influential Jasper family, led by a renowned Civil Rights leader and his formidable wife. When their adult sons return home to celebrate their mother’s birthday, the evening’s polite façade quickly unravels and ignites long-simmering tensions. By the end of the night, accusations fly and secrets are laid bare. The Jaspers are forced into a reckoning with their faith, their legacy and whether the purpose they’ve preached is one they’ve truly lived.

ADVISORY

Purpose is recommended for older teenage and adult audiences. Strong language, including the use of the n-word, is used as family secrets from both the past and present collide around mature themes and topics including racism, identity, mental health, suicide and incarceration.

Audio-Described performance

Trained volunteers describe the visual elements of the production via a hearing enhancement system, allowing patrons to hear dialogue, music and other sound effects. The description is timed to avoid interfering with dialogue. Before the show and during intermission, show and actor information are shared.
