FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK’S PRODUCTION OF COMPANY (CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s landmark musical Company, which currently is running on Broadway, was nominated today for three Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. The show originally was produced in Cincinnati in the spring of 2006 before moving to Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre that fall, where it opened to critical acclaim on November 29 and since has played to more than 157,000 people. In addition to Best Revival, Company’s director John Doyle was nominated for Best Direction of a Musical and Raúl Esparza was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. Company features Mr. Doyle’s signature method of working with actors who also serve as the show’s orchestra of musicians. The entire cast and creative team from the Cincinnati production reprised their roles on Broadway. According to Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Edward Stern, “We’re very excited for all of Company’s nominees. The Cincinnati Playhouse is proud to have originated this remarkable production and, as always, grateful to be part of such a supportive arts community that makes projects such as Company possible.” The Tony Award winners will be announced on June 10 in a live ceremony telecast from New York’s Radio City Music Hall. This award season, Company already has been recognized with the Drama League Award for Distinguished Revival of a Musical, two Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Actor in a Musical and five Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical and Outstanding Orchestrations (winners to be announced May 20). Company is a revolutionary, unconventional look at love and commitment in a complex modern world. The show is an honest, clever and sophisticated portrayal of five married couples as seen through the eyes of their mutual friend Robert, a bachelor. The story takes place on the occasion of Robert’s birthday, and he’s about to walk in on a surprise party thrown by his closest friends. Through a series of vignettes, the audience meets them as Robert weighs the pros and cons of wedded life, comparing the good and bad aspects of their marriages with three of his own less than perfect partnerships. The Cincinnati production of Company was presented by United Medical Resources, Inc. and Performance Lexus/Lexus RiverCenter. Artists fly to and from Cincinnati on Delta Connection Comair, the Playhouse’s official airline. The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to the Fine Arts Fund.
