CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK’S PRODUCTION OF COMPANY WINS
TONY AWARD FOR BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL

(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s production of Company has been honored with the 2007 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The show, which currently is running on Broadway after premiering at the Playhouse in the spring of 2006, received the award in a ceremony nationally broadcast Sunday, June 10 from New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

According to Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Edward Stern, who was on hand with the show’s New York producers to accept the award, “Obviously, to say we are thrilled is an understatement. Receiving our second Tony Award in three years — first in 2004 as the best regional theatre and now for this amazing production that first came to life here at the Cincinnati Playhouse — is a testament to the quality of work we strive for day in and day out. We’re excited that this national recognition once again shines a spotlight on Cincinnati’s thriving theatre community and are delighted for everyone involved with this production of Company.

The Tony Awards were established in 1947 to recognize theatrical excellence. The awards are presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers, the national trade association for the commercial theatre industry, and the American Theatre Wing, a charitable organization in service to both the theatre community and the community at large. Currently, there are 25 competitive categories of Tony Awards.

Earlier this award season, Company was recognized with the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Actor in a Musical and Outstanding Orchestrations; the Drama League Award for Distinguished Revival of a Musical; and two Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Actor in a Musical.

Company is a revolutionary, unconventional look at love and commitment in a complex modern world. The show is an honest, clever and sophisticated portrayal of five married couples as seen through the eyes of their mutual friend Robert, a bachelor. The story takes place on the occasion of Robert’s birthday, and he’s about to walk in on a surprise party thrown by his closest friends. Through a series of vignettes, the audience meets them as Robert weighs the pros and cons of wedded life, comparing the good and bad aspects of their marriages with three of his own less than perfect partnerships. The Cincinnati production of Company was presented by United Medical Resources, Inc. and Performance Lexus/Lexus RiverCenter.

Artists fly to and from Cincinnati on Delta Connection Comair, the Playhouse’s official airline.

The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to the Fine Arts Fund.

The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

The Playhouse also receives funding from the City of Cincinnati.
