Ace tells the story of a 1950s boy searching for a sense of family and identity in the unlikeliest of places. When troubled 10-year-old Billy Lucas is given a model airplane, it unlocks the door to a fantastic new world, with the mysterious fighter pilot Ace as his guide. Ace takes Billy on a series of heroic and haunting World War I and II adventures, and what Billy discovers reveals not only the secrets of his past but also the key to his future. Ace is presented by Duke Energy. According to Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Edward Stern, “We’re very excited that Ace will continue to see life beyond its Playhouse run. Audiences here have truly embraced this remarkable new musical, and the many Cincinnati and CCM connections within the cast and creative team are a true showcase for the talent fostered by the arts community in this city.” An excerpt from Ace initially was presented at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals in 2005. The Playhouse run is the show’s first full-scale production, a world premiere in collaboration with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, where the show was presented from September 6 to October 1. Over the past two decades, The Old Globe has been the source of premiere productions that have garnered numerous awards and international acclaim. Most recently, the Globe presented the world premiere of the Twyla Tharp/Bob Dylan musical The Times They Are a Changin', which opened on Broadway last month. The Globe’s production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is also due to transfer to Broadway this holiday season. Other Old Globe productions that have transferred to Broadway include Into the Woods, The Full Monty and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Artists fly to and from Cincinnati on Delta Connection Comair, the Playhouse’s official airline. The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to the Fine Arts Fund. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
