Synopsis

On the last night of their “Raise the Praise” U.S. tour, the Altar Boyz are coming to Cincinnati to rock the masses of all denominations! A Christian boy band hailing from Greenville, Ohio, the Boyz — Matthew (the hunky leader), Mark (the sensitive one), Luke (the bad boy), Juan (the Latin lover) and Abraham (the gefelte fish out of water) — are intent on saving souls and raising spirits with their spectacular music, sensational dancing and uncanny ability to drop the funk in freaky five-part harmony.

The Boyz come complete with their Soul Sensor DX-12, which provides a countdown throughout the concert of audience members who are burdened with sin. The mission: to witness the tally decrease to zero by the end of the night. As they watch the number tick lower and lower, the Boyz share inspirational stories of their genesis in the halls of St. Bartholomew’s Parish to the divine inspiration that changed their lives and, ultimately, helped them conquer the pancake breakfast and bingo circuit to become the talented heartthrobs they are.

As the guys perform their signature hits, featuring lyrics such as "Girl, you make me wanna wait" and "Jesus called me on my cell phone," soul-wrenching secrets tumble out with hilarious results. Along the way, the Boyz even must address their own faith in themselves and each other as they reaffirm one of life’s most important lessons: There is no harmony in a single voice.

Sharing a message of tolerance, love and the power of good hair products, this is one boy band manufactured in heaven! A critically acclaimed hit in New York, where it’s still running, Altar Boyz is a sweet-natured musical comedy spoof that won the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.
Adult Language

Altar Boyz contains only the mildest use of adult language, including “ass” (once as a curse and then four times, in jest, to reference the animal). Additionally, the word “hell” and phrase “Get the Hell out” are used, but only to describe the actual location.

Violence
  None.
Drugs/Alcohol/Smoking

None is used onstage, although one character is described as having been a little too fond of communion wine during one point in his life, during which time he was treated for “exhaustion.”

Sexual References/Nudity
No overt references are made, although there is some mild innuendo. It is insinuated that Juan is a bit flirty with pretty girls. Additionally there are references to abstinence and virginity, and, although it is never discussed, it is insinuated that one character might be gay.
Other Mature Themes

Please be aware that this show includes an element of audience participation and one member of the audience is brought onstage.

Running Time

Altar Boyz runs approximately 90 minutes. The play is performed without an intermission.
