Yet, the Starrett family finds kinship with him, and Shane helps protect their Wyoming farm in 1889. Based on the classic novel by Jack Schaefer, this world premiere by acclaimed playwright Karen Zacarías brings an exciting, fresh perspective to an extraordinary American genre.

By the end of the 1800s, about a quarter of all cowboys and farmhands were Black and an even larger percentage were of Mexican descent. Although the contributions of these cowboys of color are not widely known, some of them have become legends in their own right.

In the story of Shane, homesteaders claim and transform the Native Wyoming land. Join us for a night of conversation where we discuss environmentalism. Hosted by Homer Shadowheart and Briana Mazzolini Blanchard. Reservations recommended but not required. Playhouse Perspectives is made possible thanks to a generous gift from Barbara and Roderick Barr.
Trained volunteers describe the visual elements of the production via a hearing enhancement system, allowing patrons to hear dialogue, music and other sound effects. The description is timed to avoid interfering with dialogue. Before the show and during intermission, show and actor information are shared.
Each Rouse Theatre production offers one signed ASL performance during the show's run.
